My Top 7 Healthy Places To Eat In Bath

“Healthy In…. “ A nutritionist’s guide to places to eat in Bath

I’m a Nutritional Therapist based in the beautiful city of Bath, Somerset, UK and I work with women over 40 who want to upgrade their health and get more out of life.  Two of my personal passions include eating delicious food and travelling.

Before I visit a new location, I can literally spend hours researching places to eat in the destinations I’m visiting, whether that’s in the UK or abroad. I avoid gluten and dairy for health reasons, so it’s also a necessity to make sure that I can find something fabulous and healthy to eat that suits my dietary requirements.

Although, I have to admit that more often than not, the place I’ll search for first is a café that serves homemade gluten-free and dairy-free cakes!

So, as this is a bit of a talent of mine, I thought I’d share my finds in places I’ve visited, starting with my hometown of Bath. And I hope you’ll find some inspiration, and be able to save time when travelling here too.

In no particular order here are my ‘go-to’ eateries

1. Nook – 12, Old Bond Street, Bath - https://nooktheshop.co.uk
I think I could literally live solely on the food in this fantastic café.  poke bowls, smoothie bowls, fantastic sweet and savoury pancakes, cakes, juices and delicious coffee - and all gluten-free and (mostly) dairy free.  It’s a tiny place with upstairs and outdoor dining and they do takeaways if you like eating al-fresco or on the go. And ingredients are locally sourced, sustainable and ethical.

2. The Green Rocket – 1 Pierrepont Street, Bath - https://thegreenrocket.co.uk
This was one of the first restaurants I visited when I first moved to Bath 7 years ago. It’s been a favourite ever since. I love it because of the variety of gluten and dairy-free food, but mostly because of the quality and flavour of the dishes served – and that the portion sizes are generous which is fantastic if I’m feeling hungry. They serve plant-based food and have won multiple awards. And if you like the food you can buy the cookery book too.  It’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I love their plant-based cheeses and also their creative ways with tempeh and tofu and all the interesting sauces and sides they create.

3. Rosario’s Café – 18 Northumberland Place, Bath - https://www.rosarioscafe.co.uk/default.aspx
Mr P and I visited this local institution before we moved to Bath and it’s still a favourite for when we need a reliable coffee and cake, although they also have a full breakfast and lunch menu that’s packed with variety.  They have a great selection including a gorgeous orange and pistachio gluten and dairy-free cake and gluten-free cannoli as well as a wide range of Sicialian/Italian delights. We love the vibe of this café that’s run by the friendly Rosario and his team. It’s on 2 levels and if you’re lucky with the weather, you’ll find a cute table outside in the cobbled alleyway which is great for people watching.

4. Café Lucca, 1 Bartlett Street, Bath - https://www.cafelucca.co.uk
I absolutely love this café!  It’s located in a gorgeous building in a lovely cobbled street surrounded by fabulous shops. It also houses a wonderful and quirky clothing shop and homeware store.

The food is fresh and zingy – in particular I love the Coconut Chicken Salad which is gf and df.  They always have at least one tempting gf and df cake too! It’s a place I’ll visit on a Saturday with Mr P when we’re having a browse, or with a girlfriend for lunch during the week.

5. Rooted Café and Supper Rooms – 20, Newbridge Road - https://www.rootedcafe.co.uk
Located a little out of the centre of Bath, but within an easy walk to Chelsea Road.  This really is a gem and is family owned. It’s open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and has regular supper clubs. I love it for Sunday brunch and Sunday lunch.  It’s vegetarian and vegan and they do a wonderful full Indian breakfast with lassi, as well as regular full veggie breakfasts, pancakes, juices, cakes etc etc.  Definitely worth the visit and it’s on the corner of Chelsea Road which has a number of browsable shops and cafes.

6. Giggling Squid, Saw Close, Bath - https://www.gigglingsquid.com
Whilst it’s part of a chain I would say that it deserves a spot here for being a bit of a people-pleaser – providing you like Thai food of course. It’s one that we take guests to for its ambiance, varied menu with lots of fresh, vibrant food and the fact that they cater for all dietary needs. The décor is fantastic too and it’s always buzzing. On a nice day you can also sit outside in the square.

7. Oak Restaurant – 2 North Parade Passage, Bath - https://www.oakrestaurant.co.uk
A well-established vegetarian restaurant that’s perfect for a special occasion and can cater for gluten-free diets.  The food here is imaginative and many ingredients come from their own chemical-free gardens. It’s a cute, small restaurant in one of Bath’s lovely cobbled, historic streets.

I hope you’ve found these recommendations helpful and that you enjoy eating out in our beautiful city! And please feel free to share this with anyone you know who’s travelling to Bath! It’ll save them time too.

With best wishes

Alexis
